Introduction

As our future is critically dependent on biodiversity and a stable climate, it is essential that we understand how nature’s decline and climate change are connected. To raise awareness and encourage action, we need clear and engaging communication. One of the most well-known reports on the trends of global biodiversity is WWF's Living Planet Report. The Swedish summary of the 2022 report was translated, edited, and designed by The New Division.

Opportunity

The Living Planet Report, produced by WWF every two years, provides a comprehensive study of global trends on biodiversity and the health of the planet. The 115-page report, packed with scientific data, figures, and cases about the state of our planet, is written in English. To make this information even more accessible, WWF Sweden releases a Swedish summary at the launch of the global report. The summary aims to condense the extensive report into a digestible format that appeals to politicians, municipalities, businesses, the press, and the interested public. TND worked together with WWF to fulfill this aim by translating, editing, and designing the summary.

This case is an example of when TND has worked closely together with a client and experts to ensure that complex information is turned into a summarized and digestible format.

Process

WWF selected parts from the English report that the Swedish summary should cover. TND translated and edited the text to ensure a coherent structure and easy-to-understand language. Working closely with WWF experts, TND ensured the correct use of specific terms and terminology while suggesting cases and information to sharpen and clarify the content's meaning. Finally, TND designed the summary, selected images, and translated the graphs.

Impact

The Swedish summary's illustrations and text are used by WWF in the report, seminars, and on the website to raise awareness of the planet's severe state and the loss of biodiversity, providing politicians and businesses with a solid foundation for taking action. The media also widely covers the launch of the report.

WWF uses a KPI to measure how Swedes perceive the global biodiversity status, with recent surveys indicating that 60% of the population underestimates the situation. With this report, WWF aims to reduce this figure to encourage more people to take the issue seriously and act accordingly.

Client Feedback

"The Living Planet Report is WWF's flagship among all our scientific reports. It should be both translated and condensed into a summary that is understandable and interesting for various target groups. The New Division did a very good job with text, images, and graphs for the 2022 edition under tight deadlines. We are very satisfied."
